The Pond

The Pond, located on the western side of the property , below the pasture, was convenient for watering the livestock in the early days and was a popular spot for a game of hockey. Today, it is more of a marsh, having been mostly filled in by cattails. Surrounded by alder thickets it is a haven for birds and waterfowl but, although the museum attempts to preserve the natural habitat in and around the marsh, surrounding urban development has taken its toll. A boardwalk allows visitors a closer look at the pond where redwinged blackbirds jealously protect their territories and at least one black duck raises its brood each season. Frogs are frequently sighted and occasionally turtles and muskrats. Handsome dragonflies are common here in late summer.
